Legendary folk rocker Neil Young has sold 50% of his song catalog to the Hipgnosis Songs Fund, a U.K. investment vehicle founded by music industry veteran Merck Mercuriadis. The deal gives Hipgnosis the rights to the worldwide copyright and income interests from 1,180 songs composed by Young, and has been reported to have cost around $150 million.

The Young acquisition comes after the company acquired the rights to former Fleetwood Mac singer Lindsay Buckingham ‘s back catalogue this week, as well as Jimmy Iovine’s worldwide producer royalties. “This is a deal that changes Hipgnosis forever,” Hipgnosis founder Merck Mercuriadis said of the Young deal.
What is known is that as Neil Young’s music is delisted from Spotify, both Blackstone and Hipgnosis are losing out on royalties of 7 million monthly listeners of a catalog the UK firm just paid a billion dollars for. More intriguing is that Hipgnosis is ok with this.
