How much can you donate to the Salvation Army or Goodwill in one year? In any single tax year, you’re allowed to deduct charitable donations totaling up to 50% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). If you donate more than that, the IRS will allow you to carry over these donations for up to 5 subsequent tax years.
Receipts for tax-deductible items should be filed with a copy of the tax return on which you claimed the deductions. For these receipts, the Internal Revenue Service strongly suggests you keep original documentation for a minimum of three years after you file your tax return.
